We are delighted to be contributing to this project for @wpi_homes and so pleased to see it through planning. ⠀ The project is a pilot for WPI’s older women’s program. The model for this program allows women with too few assets to achieve home ownership to invest and secure affordable and appropriate housing into the future whilst preserving their capital. These women will no longer be locked into the private rental market, watching their savings dwindle. ⠀ Thanks to @architecture_au for the article today and to @eckersleygardenarchitecture for your wonderful contribution to landscape and @brickworksbp for your generous support of this project with the supply of bricks.
#ruckershillhouse looking nicely settled in with this beautiful light from our friends @nicholasandalistair
@boydfoundation Open day. #rbfopenday Congrats @kennedy_nolan for some beautiful work. Quote from my Rob after seeing the 2 houses ‘Testament of the power of architecture to make lives good’.. Just wonderful. Thanks for sharing.
Site update #8yardhouse .... lovely to see this coming together. A new house in a street of single fronted Victorians. Our parapet conceals a planted roof terrace (the 8th yard) that has city views across the fitzroy rooftops. Nice work by @basisbuilders and @bayviewbrickandblock
(Previously MAKE Architecture) Under our new name Studio Bright, we couldn’t be more excited about the future. We have many projects currently under construction and many on our desks that we just can’t wait to see realised. ⠀ We are delighted that our contribution to the built fabric of our cities is being recognised and we are pleased to be collaborating with larger practices both locally and internationally on projects of city shaping scales. ⠀ Our love of designing houses remains a great passion and we look forward to working with more families to help them realise their forever homes. ⠀ Please check out our new website at www.studiobright.com.au ⠀ Thanks to the photographers that have shared their unique perspectives on our work. @peterbbennetts @seanfennessy and @arorygardiner . And thanks to all of our collaborators over the years. Clients, Builders, Colleagues, Suppliers. Many of you have become our good friends and we look forward to working with you in the years ahead. ⠀ Special thanks to @studio_round and @efrontdigital for your efforts pulling everything together for this launch.
(Previously MAKE Architecture) Same team….new name. While our new name ‘Studio Bright’ has been named after Mel, there is a reason why we are not ‘Mel Bright Architects’. MAKE was built on the hard work and efforts of an amazing team. This team has worked with endless passion and enthusiasm to achieve what we have to date. ⠀ We are a team that is a family and we support and rely on each other. Architecture takes perseverance, passion and much tenacity. Our team of talented individuals have these qualities in spades. It’s not always easy and it can be hard to retain enthusiasm... buildings often take years to realise. The thing that gets us through is the superb bunch of people we get to work alongside each day. ⠀ Thank you to the Makers of Studio Bright, it is our great pleasure to work with you. ⠀ Please check out our new website at www.studiobright.com.au
(Previously MAKE Architecture) After 13 years of making, we are delighted to launch our new identity and name; Studio Bright. ⠀ The name acknowledges Mel’s ongoing leadership of the practice and also the collaborative team environment we enjoy that is so critical to good outcomes. ⠀ Our journey has offered us opportunities for which we are profoundly grateful, and looking back, we feel immensely proud of our achievements. We’ve had the fortune to gain professional recognition at State and National levels. Proud highlights include an AIA National Award for Local House, a recent Victorian AIA Award for Garden Wall House and also for Perimeter House. ⠀ Our team has created a much-loved home in a riverside barn conversion that embeds our daily work in nature. ⠀ Working with so many brave and trusting clients has been a privilege and we have taken much joy in seeing families happy in their homes, and user communities of all scales benefitting from our contribution to city making. ⠀ Please check out our new website at www.studiobright.com.au
Studio Culture | Diversity, supportive, sustainable ⠀ Our design work starts at home. One of our greatest design projects is our own lives and the lives of our family and studio team. Our working environment fosters a supportive, collegiate atmosphere. A place where young talent is encouraged and nurtured, where experiences are gained and knowledge shared. ⠀ We insist on a sustainable and socially responsible work culture where ideas and projects are discussed amongst all. We value the input of everyone and encourage the voice of all staff. Design, for us, isn’t one sketch; it’s many iterations and requires many hands. ⠀ Collaboration and rigorous testing are at the heart of everything we do.
Optimistic problem solvers | bravery ⠀ We are optimistic problem solvers that delight in tricky challenges. There is nothing more satisfying than turning what was a constraint or a compromise into a celebrated part of a project. And we know that often these constraints are actually opportunities to make a project better. ⠀ We value bravery and will assert ideas and design solutions that might not have been part of the initial brief. We might redefine or expand typologies for example to better respond to the contemporary needs of people and cities. ⠀ Our favourite question is ‘What else? What more?’ We push our design solutions to go beyond the brief and consider how it can contribute in other ways; to the site context, to the life of our clients or to the fabric of our cities.
Making | material and craft ⠀ Our ambition is to create architecture that works hard, that meets and exceeds the needs of our clients, but also, we hope to make buildings that might bring delight to look at, to touch and to experience. ⠀ Our love of materiality and of making plays out across a project in its entirety. From intimate moments, to a large scale façade, we aspire to make well-crafted details and inventive architectural form. ⠀ Looking beyond the singular object, we aim for solutions that stitch carefully into context and, when viewed close up, reveal a rich layering of surfaces and details. For us, the detail is as important as the big idea and we enjoy testing both of these through an inventive and rigorous process of design and material exploration. ⠀ 📷@peterbbennetts
Landscape | urbanism and green space ⠀ For us, good architecture does not stop at the edge of a building. Design work needs to extend to include landscape, the whole site and even the street and city beyond. ⠀ Increasingly, as we work towards densifying our cities, we aim to enhance all urban green space opportunities. We value these spaces and the relief they provide for our cities and future. ⠀ We are aware that to respond to density, we have to be inventive about what form that greenery might take. Tree rooms, garden towers, living curtains, vertical backyards, urban agriculture, a building as an arbour, or even the landscape itself.
Generosity | people and cities ⠀ Even the smallest acts of architecture have the capacity for generosity. Activating a threshold, an edge, or the meeting of inside and out, our architecture seeks to connect rather than exclude. We aim to make genuine contributions to people, to their lives and to the fabric of the city. ⠀ The places we make aspire to enrich the domestic and the public realm. We think that even a house should have civic ambitions and that the domestic scale has a key role to play in the larger city. ⠀ Our goal is for an architecture of urban generosity, to make buildings that balance the needs of the public domain as well as responding to the needs of our clients. ⠀ Collaboration with @_openwork
After 13 years in practice we have been reflecting lately on what we have done and where we are heading next. More importantly, we have been thinking about what is important to us. Leading up to an exciting new phase for MAKE, we are pleased to share some of our thoughts over the next few days. The journey so far has been an amazing ride. Starting with kitchen and bathroom renovations, to now working across all scales from houses, to public and city making projects and various educational projects. We are excited about the next stage. Our hope is to make places that connect people and enrich their daily lives and we would like to be valued for designing enduring and responsive architecture across all scales. We are optimistic problem solvers, committed to making a difference to the fabric of our cities and to the way we might live in them. cropped 📷 @peterbbennetts
Lucky us to revisit #makeperimeterhouse today for some fun things to come with @arorygardiner
Handover at #ruckershillhouse today. Stair that is a ‘stage’ entrance for family performances. Curtains to come to set the scene.....
We are just so pleased to handover our #ruckershillhouse to R+L+A+Q+M. A family that really deserves some quiet time in their home. A huge effort by the MAKE team and builder 4AD to get this one over the line. Also thanks to @mjrlandscapes and @botanicalprojects for getting landscape complete.
We made it! ⠀ Worried it might eat her. ⠀
